It is with great respect that The University of Regina Cougars Rugby Program is honouring Legendary Coach Ric Suggitt "Sluggo Cup" for their Annual prairie wide University Tournament which will feature teams from Alberta to Manitoba. Ric's Trophy will be given out this weekend in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to the Women's Cup Champions.
Ric Suggitt was one of the best coaches Canadian Rugby has ever seen and was well respected globally by all those that had the pleasure of being in his presence. Ric coached the Canadian Women's 7s, Canadian Men's 7s, then ultimately the Canadian Men's 15s program. Ric also spent time coaching the Saskatchewan Prairie Fire of the Rugby Canada Super League.
Ric's last international coaching duty was with USA Eagle's Women 7's Program. After qualifying them for the Olympic Games in 2015, he transitioned his family back to his native province of Alberta and took over as Head Coach of the Lethbridge Pronghorns Women's Team before his tragic passing last summer.
"It is not what you do; it is how you do it that moves people & empowers them to believe they can do anything they set their mind to. Sluggo embodied The Canadian Rugby Spirit and was a world class coach and someone I still look up to.
Honouring this humble Canadian legend is a symbol of motivation that anything is possible for our sport in our country. Sluggo is still in my thoughts everyday as I approach new challenges and responsibilities. He was bigger than life and will forever be remembered in our hearts."
- University of Regina Cougars Head Coach Robin MacDowell
"The Suggitt family is so honoured to have Ric recognized with the Sluggo Cup. We would like to thank Robin MacDowell and everyone else who had a part in the creation of this amazing trophy for this tournament.
Ric was passionate about the game of rugby, and he worked hard to build pathways for athletes in Canada to find their own passion for the game. Being remembered in this way is a testament to all the rugby lives he touched. We encourage everyone to have fun and to leave it all on the field this weekend."
